The Dirty Fifteen. The Clean Fifteen.

In this day and age, if you are living in America, chances are that your food consumption is based on what is considered unhealthy. Even when you consume ‘healthy’ foods such as fruits, vegetables, lean meats, etc., they are full of chemicals, pesticides, and growth hormones that most industries use to increase the amounts of their products. These unnatural additions have been linked to the cause of many diseases including cancer, heart disease, and many others. The realization of this has led much of the populations to start consuming all organic products. However, many Americans feel that becoming organic is too overpriced for them to afford.

There are some alternatives to eating organic and saving some money. If you know which produce has the most and least amount of chemical fertilizer and pesticide remains, you may focus on buying those items with the highest amount of damaging substances organic, and the produce with the least possibility of containing chemicals as you normally would. These are popularly known as the ‘clean food’ and ‘the dirty dozen’. The dirty dozen is a list of fruits and veggies that must be organic if you prefer to keep your body clean from chemicals and foreign substances, while the clean foods contain a minimal amount. Here are both lists with an addition of three produce to each, making them the dirty and clean fifteen.

 

THE DIRTY FIFTEEN

1. APPLES

Not only the fruit apple, but other apple products such as apple sauce and juices. Apples have one of the highest levels of residual chemicals and should be bought organic.

 

2. PEACHES

Delicious. However this fruit has made the list of top twelve dirty produce as one of the most contaminated.

 

3. CELERY

It doesn’t take a rocket science to know celery has high amounts of residual chemicals when not grown organically.

 

4. LETTUCE

One of the dirtiest leafy greens is lettuce, which should always be opted to buy organically, even when you tend to buy the typical bunches you see at your local grocery stores.

 

5. STRAWBERRIES

A strawberry typically contains over 50 different kinds of left over chemicals and pesticides, always causing this fruit to be placed on the dirty produce lists.

 

6. BLUEBERRIES

Another berry that ranks high here along with strawberries is blueberries.

 

7. SPINACH

Its thin leaves cause spinach to retain the most amounts of residual pesticides out of all the leafy greens out there.

 

8. CHERRIES

Heart-shaped sweet cherry

This small fruit is also best to consume  when bought or grown organically.

 

9. GRAPES

Many pesticide residues are found in grapes. Keep this in mind when buying products that originate with grapes, such as raisins and wine.

 

10. SWEET BELL PEPPERS

Sweet bell pepper does not escape this list. All its varieties in color and shape contain high levels of pesticides.

 

11. NECTARINES

Nectarines have about half the amount of pesticide residues as strawberries do. It may not be as much as most foods in this list, but it is still a large amount, causing it to be mentioned as one of dirty fifteen.

 

12. POTATOES

According to USDA tests, potatoes are also known to contain these harmful chemicals.

 

13. CUCUMBERS

Cucumbers have also tested positive for over 30 pesticide and chemical residues. When consumed inorganically it is best to peel the skin to avoid these substances from entering your stomach.

 

14. KALE

This may be a superfood, but when not bought organic, it contains high amounts of pesticide residue.

 

15. HOT PEPPERS

Last but not least, hot peppers have shown to retain a good amount of pesticide residues.

 

 

THE CLEAN FIFTEEN

The clean fifteen are the fruits and vegetables that contain the least amount of pesticide and chemicals residues. They are such trace amounts that it makes them safe to be consumed inorganically. Most also have a thick outer layer that protects the fruit/vegetable from keep these residues. Purchasing the following fifteen can save you a couple of dollars when buying healthy on a budget.
